This is a post from our sister website, The Student Fashion Blog.
Isn’t it funny how sometimes you sit at a computer, load up the internet browser and before you know it, your fingers are in autopilot reaching out to those far too familiar letters: F–A–C–E… You don’t even have to type the whole address, theauto-complete function of the browser finishes off the kill for you.
Like a classic addict case, you find yourself in a place you said you wouldn’t go again till your work was done!
If the above happens to you far too much, then perhaps some changes need to be made, especially since exams are around the corner.
Spending 10 minutes here, 5 minutes there, 30 minutes to an hour, or however much time you expend on little bursts of facebook munching, a facebook diet can go a long way in helping you get back in control.
So what’s a facebook diet? Well, as so eloquently put by the Urban Dictionary, it’s simply:
being off of facebook for a certain amount of time, for reasons such as exams, or big workloads.
To start the diet, all you have to do is deactivate your account. Your profile information is kept intact however, so you can always come back.
The first day will be tough, the next, not so bad, and the week after, your urges should be totally expunged! Ok, maybe not all of them, (like the need to do a really cool status update), but for the most part you will be ok.
I am on the diet myself (at least until the exam period passes) and some of the benefits I am enjoying from not being on facebook are:
- You Have More time!
- No Playground Drama.
- Incentive to Communicate for REAL!
You will not believe how much time you lose on facebook by checking it every few hours. Being the nerd that I am, I actually carried out an audit on how much time I spent on the website and on average, I lost collectively at least 1-2 hours a day. In a week, that’s a maximum of 14 hours! Imagine what better things you could be doing with that time.
Let’s face it, facebook is simply another playground. People get embarassed (awful pictures and videos), get into online fights (I bet you have seen quite a few), and like all playgrounds, gossip is ripe!
With a facebook diet you will avoid all of this malarkey. Maybe you will be in the dark on some matters, like when a couple breaks up and announces it to the world on facebook before personally telling their friends, but you will eventually find out when you talk, not type, to them.
And this brings me to the final benefit.
What happened to the good old phone? Are we too cheap and too short on time to get in touch with our friends? Instead of calling them, we hit them up on facebook and litter their facebook wall with spam; that’s what it is when they are getting so many messages that they can’t keep track. And then you complain for getting response a week later!
Pick up the phone and call! Psychologically, I am sure hearing a voice beats hearing the popping sound facebook makes when you receive a chat message.
What are your thoughts on this? Are you too on the diet? Let us know what you think.
